For this brief we were to create a design proposal for an art school site which is situated in the DJCAD's (Duncan of Jordanstone Collage of Art and Design) Matthew Building. We were to introduce adaptive reuse principles across a range of spatial strategies and social themes. I used an insertion strategy where the host building allows and accommodates new elements which are built to fit the exact dimensions of the existing building. The space was to be designed for an exclusive art club where only art students of DJCAD could be permitted access.
My proposal for the design was during the day the space serves as a café/bistro and during the evening it is transformed into a performance space with live music. The space allows art students to enjoy the community aspect of an art course in a more relaxed venue.

Named after the word Chroma (saturation or colour intensity) referring to the degree of vividness of a colour or how pure it is compared to its representative of the colour wheel; the DJCAD art club celebrates colour. It highlights the importance of colour in all disciplines in the art school and how it creates a strong identity within the art school community. It’s a key aspect in expressing individualism and an identity within the work created by each student.
Influenced by the likes of Krijn de Koning known for his site-specific structures – part architecture, part sculpture – using colour to offer new possibilities to navigate and experience the space. Another string influence Clive Wilkinson, who reinforces a sense of community with his energetic designs challenging the idea of spatial boundaries using colour to reinvent them.

Physical Scale Model of Space

The Matthew building has a very geometric brutalist style with its colour palate consisting of grey tones. The club introduces curved colourful elements which creates a strong contrast which slots into the existing space while still being sensitive to the original Matthew building as the character of each exist in a strong and independent manner. The space is divided using colour which separates different activities, using colour theory they are carefully selected based on their effects to human behaviour, mood and emotions.
