As part of a summer project I was asked to create an abstract object/sculpture that expresses my response to a typical material used in Interiors and Architecture. I explored the qualities, characteristics, symbolism and metaphorical observations of glass.
I started to think about what first comes to mind when I think about glass. The main words I thought about were fragile, delicate, shatter, reflection and stubborn.
Breaking the glass ceiling is a strong metaphor I relate to glass; the attitudes and traditions in a society that prevents women and ethnic minorities from rising to the top jobs, and the stereotype that women are fragile and delicate.
I also thought about reflection and it being used as a main component in mirrors (spraying a thin layer of silver or aluminium onto the back of a sheet of glass, this made me think of this concept that in the movies mirrors lead to different realities and dimensions and that there is another world and portal into different places as well as games and simulations.
My main idea for this sculpture is symbolising breaking through the glass celling into a different dimension. I used acetate to demonstrate the light shine through the cracks, this was a brilliant material to use as it has share many similar aesthetic qualities with glass.
